L.A. Road Trip

(Jon)

Jason exclaimed “Pack your bags – I’ve lined up a trip to L.A.!!! We’re leaving in three days –you down?”

Sign me up! Poor Frasier was only given 12 hours notice – but feeling inspired he instinctively knew this wasn’t a trip he could miss either… Our plans were to fly to California and pick up a friend’s Subaru and drive it back to Seattle. Keys were waiting and the car was already stocked up for the road trip; ice chest, drinks, apples, chips, car inverter, etc… Did I mention a full tank of gas? This road trip was definitely gift wrapped and we planned to make a lifelong memory out of the opportunity!

(Jason)

When I over heard my dad talking about how he was going to have fly down to LA and drive home his girlfriends daughters car I was all ears as if I just heard the wining numbers to a lottery ticket that I was holding in my hands. Within seconds I had worked out every detail in my mind, and had visualized exactly what it was going to be like and next thing I know they agreed to pay for my ticket to fly down to LA and help with gas on the way back. As one could imagine by this point I am completely buzzing with electricity and within seconds I was on the phone with Jon selling the idea to him, which was the exact opposite from selling Ice to an Eskimo. Next thing you know Jon and I were discussing what this trip was going to be like and it felt like something or someone was missing from the equation, and then a light bulb turned on in my head "Frazier!" I exclaimed out loud like I was an umpire yelling a strike. That was it, he needed to come, and as quickly as I thought it, I called him and he was sold as well, just as I had hoped. After working out some details, by nine at night Frazier had his golden ticket and it had finally solidified, he was flying with us in less then ten hours from that moment. Done deal.

As we flew down on the plane we began talking about how Jon and our buddy Joe had been on a road trip a few years back and made a "To Do" list of things that they had to do on the trip, and how it had the most epic road trip of their lives full of crazy stories, and so we decided, as we sat in our seats on the plane, to make up one of our own. We got really loud and into making this list and I'm sure that everybody within a couple rows of us new exactly what we were going to be up to once we touched down in LA. We arrived in LA not knowing exactly what the plans were, except to have one hell of a road trip, which thanks to the list we exceeded our expectations with flying colors.

Arriving at Venice Beach was like arriving to the promise land, full of beautiful woman, cool people, and of course the Pacific ocean. It was hard to believe that we had finally made it. I was especially excited because this was a dream come true for me. Ever since I was a little kid growing up skateboarding I have always dreamt about what it would be like to skateboard in Southern California and now my dreams were coming true. By the end of the first day at Venice Beach, we had talked to probably a hundred girls trying to find an Amy, skated Venice Beaches renowned skate park, had a few drinks with Rae and Elizabeth (two couch surfers that recently graduated from UCLA), met three really cool German girls and danced with them for hours at a lifeguard tower we dubbed 'Club Baywatch'. Eventually we made our way back to the Subaru in the parking lot where Jon, Frazier and I were all going to sleep. By about four in the morning Jon decided that sleeping in the middle of Frazier and I in the back of the car was not working out, especially since Frazier and I were able to turn off to our sides and he was stuck on his back because none of us wanted to spoon. I guess he could have flipped onto his stomach, but that still would have involved at least a little sporking and that isn't cool either, good times!

The first thing that was on my mind as I woke up was, I need to surf, because I had never done it. As I surfed, I was thinking this isn't as hard as everybody says, that's until I fell flat on my face into the ocean's current, but then I got up again no problem, I guess I'm a natural, or maybe just the adrenalin was flowing so thick through my veins just as heroin was flowing through Jimmy Hendrix's in the sixties. After we washed up (rinsed off under the public outside shower) We went straight to a few of the tourist stops like Beverly Hills, and Hollywood, and then we headed to North Hollywood to hang out with one of Frazier's family friends Jillian Nelson, who is a beautiful actress that has starred in numerous music video's including Toby Keith's "God love her" and Rascal Flatt's "Take me there" to name a few. Now Frazier, Jon and I are really excited, as one could imagine, and don't want the day to end. After a day of hanging out grilling on the barbecue, and swimming in her private rooftop swimming pool with this big time actress it was time to move on. The next stop was our Couchsurfing friends place in West L.A. (whom by the way even though we had never met him before he still left a key for us so we could get in if he wasn't there). That's the magic of Couchsurfing, the automatic friendship is invaluable and very precious in today's world. After a night of conversation evolving around Jason's worldly travels, sharing laughs, our night trip to one of the many taco trucks in the area, and a day hanging out with a beautiful Hollywood actress we were dead tired and crashed out for the night.

Waking up the next day we decided that it was probably about time that we start heading north since we were suppose to be back in a few days and we had only covered 10 miles of our 1200 mile journey. We hit up a few more beaches like Redondo, Manhattan, and Zuma beach. At Manhattan beach Frazier found a plum tree and decided it would a good idea to not only steal a plum but then steal some water to wash off the plum-two separate houses. Some call him a thief; I call him Robin Hood.  It was time to go, so we headed straight up the 101 headed north toward Santa Barbara. As soon as we arrived, we whipped out bread, banana's and Adam's Peanut Butter and made ourselves  peanut butter and banana wraps. Of course the first order of business was to find tree's for our hammocks, and so we found a perfect spot down by the harbor and city park, and made ourselves at home. I was super stoked because these tree's happened to be right next to one of the best skateboard parks that I have ever skated. As we were walking on the boardwalk back toward the car one of us noticed three good looking young girls and of course we said something to them and next thing you know they are buying us pitchers of beer. Coincidence maybe, but more likely it came true because we put in on "The List".

While we were at the bar that night, one thing led to the next and then I found myself on one knee in front of the this bar crowd (probably 20 people or so) asking a random girl if she wanted to marry me. After about a three second awkward pause, and silence, she said yes. So now the whole bar believes that I just asked this girl to marry me and so of course every body is clapping and congratulating us, even though in reality this was just one of the to do's from "The List." So now she is on cloud nine and so she begins dancing and doesn't stop for probably two hours straight, even though she was the only one on the dance floor. I guess the deal is, we are going to get married in five years if neither us our hitched by then, we'll see!

Continuing up the coast we stopped in Santa Cruz for a couple of hours, and then made our way up north to San Fransisco. Accidentally we headed straight toward the Golden Gate Bridge but we weren't meaning to cross it at all. There is a toll so we start freaking out and looking for an exit, which we found at the last second. After meandering our way back toward the city on back streets we headed straight for China town for food since Frazier speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese and we were starving. We found ourselves a little place that had reasonable prices and then sat ourselves to a table. After a few minutes of being ignored Frazier yells aggressively across the restaurant in Mandarin, which by the way was full of Chinese people, "Hey! We need food so quit ignoring us and get over here!"  or something to that effect and within seconds the room was silent, no more clanking forks, just blank stares looking at us in disbelief, especially since we are the only three white guys in the place. According to Frazier, whom by the way has spent four years in Beijing, that's how you have to be, or else nothing will happen. That or he just wanted Jon and I to feel extremely uncomfortable, I'm not sure. After this, we met up with our new German friends, Anissa, Lynda, and Eva for a little reminisce, and then we were back on the road with Frazier driving through the night until early morning fueled by high octane gas station coffee and it was worth the risk, according to Frazier!

The next day we woke up, started driving north on I 5, and made our way through Oregon country. For most of the day Jon would be passed out in the back seat in some of the most uncomfortable napping positions that we have ever seen, while Frazier and I discussed me moving to Beijing to teach English  for a few months in the winter. Arriving to the city we miss the exit and have to make a round about, and then we miss the exit again and so we repeated the process once again, the blind leading the blind one might say. Portland Oregon with all of it's splendor was awaiting the arrival of the Hammock Brothers, and we were happy to entertain. The night consisted of many great memories like the exchanging of the shirts with a stranger, taking a photo of us with a blond, brunette, and a read head, and finding an Amy of course. Thanks to the list, it provided more then enough entertainment for us as for the people of the streets in Oregon. But, there were still "To Do's" and so the best memories of the night were still to come.

One of our "To Do's" from "The List" was to freestyle battle with at least one person, even though we have no rap skills. We had no idea it was going to turn into a ten person all out rap war in the middle of the city. It shouldn't have surprised us though, for when alcohol and ego is involved on the streets of Portland, raps are sure to follow as we soon learned. After a few minutes, we had a philosopher, a  producer, a bum and many other character's all happily competing for best rapper position, execpt for the bum, he was just sort of in the way. It must have gone on for a half an hour or so, eventually we just had to leave as they continued on, it was hilariously entertaining. Now, we are strong believers  in the list, and jokingly I write down a new "To Do" which involved getting a "F**k It" tattoo. Frazier and Jon freak out because they know this is joking matter!

As the night continues on, we meander our way through the downtown district, eat some great pizza, meet some new friends and then the story begins... Frazier and I walk into one of the bars, and as usual try to spot some girls to talk to. Before you know it we are conversing with two girls about our road trip and our list and then it comes up that one of us has to get this tattoo that says "F**k It,". They freak out and want nothing more than this to happen. Crap! I'm thinking to myself, as I look over at Frazier who has the exact same look on his face. I try explaining to these all to excited girls that I have no money and so therefore it won't be possible. They reply to my "Alamo statement" or last ditch effort to have them back off with a "Nonsense, we'll go ask for some money from people outside!!" Great! I have nothing as a rebuttal and so I hesitantly begin walking outside towards the crowds of people with my new supporters of our dumb decision of putting this "To Do" on "The List." After a few minutes and a few dollars tossed my way, I realized something. I realized that in the process of the girls helping us get money for this tattoo we were actually accomplishing another "To Do," which was to pan handle five dollars. By this point we are dangerously close to the tattoo shop. Within another minute I had the five dollars, but just my luck I was standing at the door of the tattoo shop, and then we entered. I look over at Frazier and he's scared as shit for me, I was a little buzzed and so I still was not too concerned, even though in back of my mind I'm thinking to myself, this tattoo artist really might follow through with this because of the entertainment value even though I only had five dollars. Frazier pulls me off to the side with cat like reflexes and exclaims, "We've got to get the hell out of here bro, let's run!" I look at him in an agreement and then we begin running. We ran like the Taraumara (The fastest runners in the world) and made it about ten blocks in less then a minute. No more worrying about the tattoo though; I was free! Or at least I thought so... Later on we were hungry from all that running and we decided to buy two quesadillas with the money that was pan handled for the tattoo, and while we were enjoying them to their fullest extent the panhandling girls pop up out of nowhere and smack the quesadilla out of Frazier's hand out of spitefulness over the whole incident. It blew our minds that we randomly ran into these girls... especially since we were so far from the tattoo shop, and that they caught us red handed with the food we bought with their hard earned pan handled money.
So that was it, that was our LA road trip 2010. In looking back, everything happened that we wanted to experience. Everything on the to do list except for running out of gas, and ride a unicycle, if only we would have put "Win the lottery" on the list as well! whomever is interested in a road trip like this, I have one suggestion, make a list. Put yourself out there just as we did, and you will become a believer as well.

Hitch Hiking our way around the Island

(Jason)

After all we had been through in Hawaii it's hard to believe that we are back in Washington. Our days in Maui were some of the most epic days of our lives. While most of our friends were back at home working, we were in Maui cliff jumping, swimming with turtles, eating fresh mango, making our way through underground taverns and deep black pools of water on the most dangerous hike on Maui, sleeping in tree's, hitch hiking our way around the island, and meeting some of the coolest people in one of the most majestic tropical paradises in the world.

I'll start with our hitch hiking adventure. The morning began with the Hammock Brothers healing up from our battle wounds from the day before; Jon with some crazy bug bite on his back, Justin with cuts on his arms from rock climbing on the beach, and my neck was tweaked from landing wrong on the highest cliff jump at the Commando hike. My family decided they wanted to drive the road to Hana, so we headed out with the morning sun beaming down on us. The road to Hana hugs the North Eastern coast of Maui navigating through the least populated and most dense part of the island. Along the way we walked through a bamboo forest, stopped at a botanical garden, and enjoyed the black sand beach in the state park. After driving slowly through through Hana, we arrived at the Haleakala National Park which boast the Seven Sacred Pools (a series of tranquil waterfalls that flow into calming pools of water each leading to the next fall eventually making its way to the ocean. Leaving the pools, Justin, Jon, and I made our decision to stay behind and spend the night camping at the park as the rest of my family drove back to Kihei. Our annual national parks pass we purchased for the road trip across the US proved helpful; our entrance and camping fees waived.

We weren't the most prepared for being dropped off that far away from Kihei without a ride back. Our rations were: a little bit of left over chicken, three beers, some nuts, two sandwiches, and a little bit of water to hold us until we were able to hitchhike back (or walk the 45 miles through the most desolate stretch of the island). We would soon determine we would be much better off if I would've brought a sleeping bag and Jon would've brought his tarp.

We embraced the fact that it was time to fend for ourselves without the comforts of the condo, and enjoyed the true Maui and all her grandeur. The evening was very peaceful at the park as we hung out with our neighbors Rahul and Andre from Brazil and ate our left over chicken for dinner.  The tree we chose for shelter from the rain had a roof so thick it looked as if it had been thatched and would have held up in Washington's rain - however Hawaii is a tropical island for a reason... It's not a pleasant feeling waking up to rain drops landing on my face, but after we built a fire to warm us up and did some hammock adjusting we found the best shelter the tree could provide and we managed to work our way back to sleep for a few more hours. Although this may not sound that fun - these memories stand out the most and reaffirms our appreciation of the simple things in life; like staying dry when sleeping.

We awoke and executed our exit strategy... thumbing a ride back. On the road we found plenty of towering mango trees with fresh mangoes falling to the ground. (AKA a delicious free breakfast) After about a mile on the road we found a place called Cafe Attitude, which we found out is frequented by people such as Jason Mraz and other stars. This place is amazing, they grow all their own produce, organic coffee, and even generate power for their blender from a bicycle converted into a generator. After hanging out for a while we found ourselves back on the road with our thumbs out again, except now it was raining. This part of the island is the windward side and it catches all the storms that come in. Many cars were passing with shrugged shoulders but our first taste of success was a guy who stopped and didn't have room for us but offered us cold beers for the road! Now we were having the times of our lives! After all we're in Hawaii, on a back country road, eating fresh mango's, drinking free beers, and sharing the thrill of not knowing how we'd get home.

Before we could even finish our beers more cars stopped and talked with us. I even began to joke about how cool it would be to be picked up by a nice new Jeep. Next thing we knew my dreams were answered when Rich and Becky stopped and offered us a ride in a spacious hard top Jeep! We were elated for the ride and our glowing faces soon spread to Rich and Becky. We kept them laughing the whole way - and even when I joked about getting picked up in a Jeep I didn't imagine it would have an ice chest full of beer and a driver insistent on sharing for the hour and a half drive. The Jeep was instrumental in navigating the slightly treacherous dirt road clinging to the side of the mountain.

In Maui, it is legal and widely accepted to hitch hike, and as you've read our experience was about as ideal as it gets!

Maui was everything we wanted it to be plus more; we just wish we had more time in this American paradise. It is impossible to do and see everything in Maui in a week, but even if you can only make it there for a week we would highly suggest it. Direct flights to Maui are surprisingly cheap, and if you are open to sleeping on the beach accommodations can be free. We are thinking about going back in September for another month or so because it's just to cool to pass up.

Maui, HI

(Jon)

Our trip to Maui has finally arrived! We had to leave our house at 4:45AM to meet up with the rest of Justin and Jason's family - they hired a driver to bring us all to the airport. In total there is 15 in our group - and after our long flight I was surprised to hear that they had two condos - I thought we were all going to pack into one. It felt like our pilot gave us a tour of the islands as he circled in to land the plane. We could see the stiff winds blowing the sugarcane and white caps over the blue waters near the coast - we were about to debark the plane and enter tropical paradise.

We would be really busy our first day - stopping at Costco to stock up on supplies on our way to the resort from the airport. After several trips of unloading the van it was time to throw on the bathing suit and hit the pool. Many of us had starting drinking on the plane - and Tony had started before he even left his house for the airport - as he hates flying: suffice to say it would be an early night for us as the 3 hour time change and our early start on the day had us all wiped out.

When I woke up this morning I decided to go for a run down to the beach as I was a bit disappointed in myself for not making it to the ocean yesterday. The sun was just coming up and all the birds were singing their morning calls. Once I made it down to the water I sat there for a while absorbing the dramatic scenery. I could see another island across the water with big pillow clouds adorning it on both sides. The park I was in wasn't a beach - but lava rocks dropping off twenty feet down to the ocean with the waves beating against them. On my way back I ended up following behind a gray haired man on his morning jog - and he increased his pace shortly after I was on his tail - and I tried my best to keep up but luckily I didn't have nearly as far to run...

When I returned to the condo everyone was starting to congregate for breakfast. As it was cooking I knocked out a few chapters of the book I'm reading - the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho - which is a wonderfully written book that we all recommend.

After breakfast Justin and I checked out some putters from the office and played around for about an hour on the practice green they had near the pool.  Everyone else had migrated to the pool again and I snuck in a nap before we headed out to rent snorkels for the week. All this and it was only 9:15AM when I got in the car...

I've never been snorkeling before - but I'm hooked now. It's so beautiful swimming with the fish and diving down really deep with fins on my feet. By the end of the week I'm going to have a lot of snorkeling experience as I plan to go everyday I can.

We'll update more after we do some hikes - but right now we're all headed out to celebrate as we just heard Justin and Jason's brother Jeremy just proposed to his girlfriend!

Heather Lake Trail Hike

Jason,

Update- Yesterday, Jon finished his negotiations on purchasing the "Irish Lady," and now its just a matter of going through steps to purchase his dream sailboat that will take us around Vancouver come the beginning of June- that's the audacious goal anyway! Until then, we have got a lot to learn about sailing, especially Justin and I who have never really sailed a day in our lives. Jon, on the other hand, has been racing on a team for a while and at least knows the basics, but we all have a lot to learn. We will be in Hawaii in three days, it's a tough life I know, so for now we are just enjoying spring time in Washington as we all should.

Heather Lake- We got invited to go on a hike with some friends up to Heather Lake on monday and so we hopped on the opportunity as we usually do. We met up with our friends Matt, Mariah, and their two friends Lennie, and Mario at the trail head, we headed off on the trail, through the woods, like the seven dwarfs, and slowly made our way up the two mile trek to the majestic lake. This time of year the forest is teeming with new life and the snow melting vigorously, creating plenty of streams to try to hop around and through. Making it to the lake, Ben, Maria, and Matt decided to dive into the frigid water, making for great entertainment. Of course, I would have jumped in but I'm fighting a minor cold, at least that's what I'm telling myself. The lake is nested on the North Eastern part of Mt Pilchuck which is only a twenty minute drive east of Granite Falls, and is a great family friendly, well groomed, old growth forest hike with breathtaking scenery. Highly Recommended! After enjoying the majestic views, our lunch, and our unexpected entertainment, we made our way back down through the forest and called it a day. For you that are interested in the hike, I have attached a link at the bottom of this post for driving directions, details, and a summary of hike.

Thank you for your continued support, and hopefully as always you all find get inspired to want to go out and enjoy all of what this world have to offer us all. We will keep you posted of what we are up to so please check back soon.

Jason joins the Hammock Brothers full time: his early retirement story...

(Jason)

We're back!!! Today is Saturday May 1st and it's the first day of the rest of my life. For the past two months after coming back from my time on the road with Jon, Sam, Justin, and Buzzer, I have been methodically, and tediously putting away every dime that I could so that I could follow through with leaving my job, and being free to travel, and explore for the foreseeable future. At times it has been hard, (like deciding to sell my car to reduce my debt and lower my monthly expenses/selling my furniture/ following a strict budget accounting for my entire paychecks) but not for a minute have I questioned my decision of leaving my job and pursuing my Passion. I have held close to my heart very strong beliefs about why I am taking the calculated risk of leaving my job. I believe the more risk I take in life the more reward, as well as less regret that I didn't truly live life. I believe at 24 years old there is nothing more that I want to do in my life than to travel, couch surf, live simply, follow my passion, experience new people and cultures, and live for the day. I, like most people, have had a tendency of putting too much hope in the future and not appreciating today as much as I should, and I am determined to re-condition my mind and get the most out of every single day. Some may think I am crazy for doing what I am doing, and maybe I am, but I know it is the right thing for me to do. I'm looking forward to escaping the rat race as long as possible - and we're actively seeking ways that our next source of income might not be a job as much as a passion. As a group the hammock brothers are growing not only in numbers but in a diverse array of talents, strengths, ideas, and we all feel how much stronger we are as a group than we are individually. We've been brought together by our adventurous spirit which has enabled us to do far more than we ever thought - but we're realizing working together can drive us to new highs in all aspects of our life.

In the past month or so since the last update not too much has gone on. Justin and Jon have been tieing up their loose ends, enjoying the last bit of time at our home, and preparing for our departure. I have been working, saving, reading a ton and hanging out with family, for it will probably be a while until I see most of them. The past week has been really hard on me having to say good bye to all of my clients that I have gotten to know over the past year. I truly am going to miss most of them, and I hope they follow my travels. Last night, they threw an early retirement party for me and as a symbol of me not being a slave to my alarm clock any more, Jon and Justin surprised me with a hammer, and my alarm clock to bash up into a million pieces. It was like the scene from Office Space where he took all of his aggression out on the copier machine - except with a crowd of envious onlookers wishing they were the ones smashing their alarm clocks.  I had a great time and I was happy to be able to share my excitement with my friends. Jon, Justin, and I have been deciding what path we want to choose for our travels and we have been discussing backpacking either Mexico, South America, or Europe, or buying a sail boat and sailing around Vancouver Island. We are on the cusp of making our decision and we are leaning toward sailing around the island for many reasons; like the accomplishment, challenge, lifestyle, and adventure that it would provide us. Next Friday we will be headed to Hawaii for a week and will be updating the blog while we are there, and then we will be leaving for wherever we end up going.

For all of you that have been following our adventures, I appreciate every one of you and look forward to providing you with inspirational, entertaining content. Now that I have joined the team full time the blog will be updated more frequently. Our vision for what this website should be is a place where you can learn, grow, and experience this world with us and through our eyes in a way that inspires you to pursue your passions, and dreams, whatever they may be. Exciting adventures are ahead so please continue to follow us and please help spread the word as we begin traveling again. Thank you again, and always remember, seize the day.
