Maui, HI

(Jon)

Our trip to Maui has finally arrived! We had to leave our house at 4:45AM to meet up with the rest of Justin and Jason's family - they hired a driver to bring us all to the airport. In total there is 15 in our group - and after our long flight I was surprised to hear that they had two condos - I thought we were all going to pack into one. It felt like our pilot gave us a tour of the islands as he circled in to land the plane. We could see the stiff winds blowing the sugarcane and white caps over the blue waters near the coast - we were about to debark the plane and enter tropical paradise.

We would be really busy our first day - stopping at Costco to stock up on supplies on our way to the resort from the airport. After several trips of unloading the van it was time to throw on the bathing suit and hit the pool. Many of us had starting drinking on the plane - and Tony had started before he even left his house for the airport - as he hates flying: suffice to say it would be an early night for us as the 3 hour time change and our early start on the day had us all wiped out.

When I woke up this morning I decided to go for a run down to the beach as I was a bit disappointed in myself for not making it to the ocean yesterday. The sun was just coming up and all the birds were singing their morning calls. Once I made it down to the water I sat there for a while absorbing the dramatic scenery. I could see another island across the water with big pillow clouds adorning it on both sides. The park I was in wasn't a beach - but lava rocks dropping off twenty feet down to the ocean with the waves beating against them. On my way back I ended up following behind a gray haired man on his morning jog - and he increased his pace shortly after I was on his tail - and I tried my best to keep up but luckily I didn't have nearly as far to run...

When I returned to the condo everyone was starting to congregate for breakfast. As it was cooking I knocked out a few chapters of the book I'm reading - the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho - which is a wonderfully written book that we all recommend.

After breakfast Justin and I checked out some putters from the office and played around for about an hour on the practice green they had near the pool.  Everyone else had migrated to the pool again and I snuck in a nap before we headed out to rent snorkels for the week. All this and it was only 9:15AM when I got in the car...

I've never been snorkeling before - but I'm hooked now. It's so beautiful swimming with the fish and diving down really deep with fins on my feet. By the end of the week I'm going to have a lot of snorkeling experience as I plan to go everyday I can.

We'll update more after we do some hikes - but right now we're all headed out to celebrate as we just heard Justin and Jason's brother Jeremy just proposed to his girlfriend!
