After all we had been through in Hawaii it's hard to believe that we are back in Washington. Our days in Maui were some of the most epic days of our lives. While most of our friends were back at home working, we were in Maui cliff jumping, swimming with turtles, eating fresh mango, making our way through underground taverns and deep black pools of water on the most dangerous hike on Maui, sleeping in tree's, hitch hiking our way around the island, and meeting some of the coolest people in one of the most majestic tropical paradises in the world.
I'll start with our hitch hiking adventure. The morning began with the Hammock Brothers healing up from our battle wounds from the day before; Jon with some crazy bug bite on his back, Justin with cuts on his arms from rock climbing on the beach, and my neck was tweaked from landing wrong on the highest cliff jump at the Commando hike. My family decided they wanted to drive the road to Hana, so we headed out with the morning sun beaming down on us. The road to Hana hugs the North Eastern coast of Maui navigating through the least populated and most dense part of the island. Along the way we walked through a bamboo forest, stopped at a botanical garden, and enjoyed the black sand beach in the state park. After driving slowly through through Hana, we arrived at the Haleakala National Park which boast the Seven Sacred Pools (a series of tranquil waterfalls that flow into calming pools of water each leading to the next fall eventually making its way to the ocean. Leaving the pools, Justin, Jon, and I made our decision to stay behind and spend the night camping at the park as the rest of my family drove back to Kihei. Our annual national parks pass we purchased for the road trip across the US proved helpful; our entrance and camping fees waived.
We weren't the most prepared for being dropped off that far away from Kihei without a ride back. Our rations were: a little bit of left over chicken, three beers, some nuts, two sandwiches, and a little bit of water to hold us until we were able to hitchhike back (or walk the 45 miles through the most desolate stretch of the island). We would soon determine we would be much better off if I would've brought a sleeping bag and Jon would've brought his tarp.
We embraced the fact that it was time to fend for ourselves without the comforts of the condo, and enjoyed the true Maui and all her grandeur. The evening was very peaceful at the park as we hung out with our neighbors Rahul and Andre from Brazil and ate our left over chicken for dinner. The tree we chose for shelter from the rain had a roof so thick it looked as if it had been thatched and would have held up in Washington's rain - however Hawaii is a tropical island for a reason... It's not a pleasant feeling waking up to rain drops landing on my face, but after we built a fire to warm us up and did some hammock adjusting we found the best shelter the tree could provide and we managed to work our way back to sleep for a few more hours. Although this may not sound that fun - these memories stand out the most and reaffirms our appreciation of the simple things in life; like staying dry when sleeping.
We awoke and executed our exit strategy... thumbing a ride back. On the road we found plenty of towering mango trees with fresh mangoes falling to the ground. (AKA a delicious free breakfast) After about a mile on the road we found a place called Cafe Attitude, which we found out is frequented by people such as Jason Mraz and other stars. This place is amazing, they grow all their own produce, organic coffee, and even generate power for their blender from a bicycle converted into a generator. After hanging out for a while we found ourselves back on the road with our thumbs out again, except now it was raining. This part of the island is the windward side and it catches all the storms that come in. Many cars were passing with shrugged shoulders but our first taste of success was a guy who stopped and didn't have room for us but offered us cold beers for the road! Now we were having the times of our lives! After all we're in Hawaii, on a back country road, eating fresh mango's, drinking free beers, and sharing the thrill of not knowing how we'd get home.
Before we could even finish our beers more cars stopped and talked with us. I even began to joke about how cool it would be to be picked up by a nice new Jeep. Next thing we knew my dreams were answered when Rich and Becky stopped and offered us a ride in a spacious hard top Jeep! We were elated for the ride and our glowing faces soon spread to Rich and Becky. We kept them laughing the whole way - and even when I joked about getting picked up in a Jeep I didn't imagine it would have an ice chest full of beer and a driver insistent on sharing for the hour and a half drive. The Jeep was instrumental in navigating the slightly treacherous dirt road clinging to the side of the mountain.
In Maui, it is legal and widely accepted to hitch hike, and as you've read our experience was about as ideal as it gets!
Maui was everything we wanted it to be plus more; we just wish we had more time in this American paradise. It is impossible to do and see everything in Maui in a week, but even if you can only make it there for a week we would highly suggest it. Direct flights to Maui are surprisingly cheap, and if you are open to sleeping on the beach accommodations can be free. We are thinking about going back in September for another month or so because it's just to cool to pass up.

Maui, HI
(Jon)
Our trip to Maui has finally arrived! We had to leave our house at 4:45AM to meet up with the rest of Justin and Jason's family - they hired a driver to bring us all to the airport. In total there is 15 in our group - and after our long flight I was surprised to hear that they had two condos - I thought we were all going to pack into one. It felt like our pilot gave us a tour of the islands as he circled in to land the plane. We could see the stiff winds blowing the sugarcane and white caps over the blue waters near the coast - we were about to debark the plane and enter tropical paradise.
We would be really busy our first day - stopping at Costco to stock up on supplies on our way to the resort from the airport. After several trips of unloading the van it was time to throw on the bathing suit and hit the pool. Many of us had starting drinking on the plane - and Tony had started before he even left his house for the airport - as he hates flying: suffice to say it would be an early night for us as the 3 hour time change and our early start on the day had us all wiped out.
When I woke up this morning I decided to go for a run down to the beach as I was a bit disappointed in myself for not making it to the ocean yesterday. The sun was just coming up and all the birds were singing their morning calls. Once I made it down to the water I sat there for a while absorbing the dramatic scenery. I could see another island across the water with big pillow clouds adorning it on both sides. The park I was in wasn't a beach - but lava rocks dropping off twenty feet down to the ocean with the waves beating against them. On my way back I ended up following behind a gray haired man on his morning jog - and he increased his pace shortly after I was on his tail - and I tried my best to keep up but luckily I didn't have nearly as far to run...
When I returned to the condo everyone was starting to congregate for breakfast. As it was cooking I knocked out a few chapters of the book I'm reading - the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho - which is a wonderfully written book that we all recommend.
After breakfast Justin and I checked out some putters from the office and played around for about an hour on the practice green they had near the pool. Everyone else had migrated to the pool again and I snuck in a nap before we headed out to rent snorkels for the week. All this and it was only 9:15AM when I got in the car...
I've never been snorkeling before - but I'm hooked now. It's so beautiful swimming with the fish and diving down really deep with fins on my feet. By the end of the week I'm going to have a lot of snorkeling experience as I plan to go everyday I can.
We'll update more after we do some hikes - but right now we're all headed out to celebrate as we just heard Justin and Jason's brother Jeremy just proposed to his girlfriend!

Heather Lake Trail Hike
Jason,
Update- Yesterday, Jon finished his negotiations on purchasing the "Irish Lady," and now its just a matter of going through steps to purchase his dream sailboat that will take us around Vancouver come the beginning of June- that's the audacious goal anyway! Until then, we have got a lot to learn about sailing, especially Justin and I who have never really sailed a day in our lives. Jon, on the other hand, has been racing on a team for a while and at least knows the basics, but we all have a lot to learn. We will be in Hawaii in three days, it's a tough life I know, so for now we are just enjoying spring time in Washington as we all should.
Heather Lake- We got invited to go on a hike with some friends up to Heather Lake on monday and so we hopped on the opportunity as we usually do. We met up with our friends Matt, Mariah, and their two friends Lennie, and Mario at the trail head, we headed off on the trail, through the woods, like the seven dwarfs, and slowly made our way up the two mile trek to the majestic lake. This time of year the forest is teeming with new life and the snow melting vigorously, creating plenty of streams to try to hop around and through. Making it to the lake, Ben, Maria, and Matt decided to dive into the frigid water, making for great entertainment. Of course, I would have jumped in but I'm fighting a minor cold, at least that's what I'm telling myself. The lake is nested on the North Eastern part of Mt Pilchuck which is only a twenty minute drive east of Granite Falls, and is a great family friendly, well groomed, old growth forest hike with breathtaking scenery. Highly Recommended! After enjoying the majestic views, our lunch, and our unexpected entertainment, we made our way back down through the forest and called it a day. For you that are interested in the hike, I have attached a link at the bottom of this post for driving directions, details, and a summary of hike.
Thank you for your continued support, and hopefully as always you all find get inspired to want to go out and enjoy all of what this world have to offer us all. We will keep you posted of what we are up to so please check back soon.

Jason joins the Hammock Brothers full time: his early retirement story...
(Jason)
We're back!!! Today is Saturday May 1st and it's the first day of the rest of my life. For the past two months after coming back from my time on the road with Jon, Sam, Justin, and Buzzer, I have been methodically, and tediously putting away every dime that I could so that I could follow through with leaving my job, and being free to travel, and explore for the foreseeable future. At times it has been hard, (like deciding to sell my car to reduce my debt and lower my monthly expenses/selling my furniture/ following a strict budget accounting for my entire paychecks) but not for a minute have I questioned my decision of leaving my job and pursuing my Passion. I have held close to my heart very strong beliefs about why I am taking the calculated risk of leaving my job. I believe the more risk I take in life the more reward, as well as less regret that I didn't truly live life. I believe at 24 years old there is nothing more that I want to do in my life than to travel, couch surf, live simply, follow my passion, experience new people and cultures, and live for the day. I, like most people, have had a tendency of putting too much hope in the future and not appreciating today as much as I should, and I am determined to re-condition my mind and get the most out of every single day. Some may think I am crazy for doing what I am doing, and maybe I am, but I know it is the right thing for me to do. I'm looking forward to escaping the rat race as long as possible - and we're actively seeking ways that our next source of income might not be a job as much as a passion. As a group the hammock brothers are growing not only in numbers but in a diverse array of talents, strengths, ideas, and we all feel how much stronger we are as a group than we are individually. We've been brought together by our adventurous spirit which has enabled us to do far more than we ever thought - but we're realizing working together can drive us to new highs in all aspects of our life.
In the past month or so since the last update not too much has gone on. Justin and Jon have been tieing up their loose ends, enjoying the last bit of time at our home, and preparing for our departure. I have been working, saving, reading a ton and hanging out with family, for it will probably be a while until I see most of them. The past week has been really hard on me having to say good bye to all of my clients that I have gotten to know over the past year. I truly am going to miss most of them, and I hope they follow my travels. Last night, they threw an early retirement party for me and as a symbol of me not being a slave to my alarm clock any more, Jon and Justin surprised me with a hammer, and my alarm clock to bash up into a million pieces. It was like the scene from Office Space where he took all of his aggression out on the copier machine - except with a crowd of envious onlookers wishing they were the ones smashing their alarm clocks. I had a great time and I was happy to be able to share my excitement with my friends. Jon, Justin, and I have been deciding what path we want to choose for our travels and we have been discussing backpacking either Mexico, South America, or Europe, or buying a sail boat and sailing around Vancouver Island. We are on the cusp of making our decision and we are leaning toward sailing around the island for many reasons; like the accomplishment, challenge, lifestyle, and adventure that it would provide us. Next Friday we will be headed to Hawaii for a week and will be updating the blog while we are there, and then we will be leaving for wherever we end up going.
For all of you that have been following our adventures, I appreciate every one of you and look forward to providing you with inspirational, entertaining content. Now that I have joined the team full time the blog will be updated more frequently. Our vision for what this website should be is a place where you can learn, grow, and experience this world with us and through our eyes in a way that inspires you to pursue your passions, and dreams, whatever they may be. Exciting adventures are ahead so please continue to follow us and please help spread the word as we begin traveling again. Thank you again, and always remember, seize the day.
